Saving Our Families

A whole ecosystem of support, built around the family.

Who We Are

Building and rebuilding the foundations of our community.

Akili Shakur Executive Director
Chris Matthews Pastor

Saving Our Families is a community outreach program in partnership with Christ United Methodist Church.

Saving Our Families (SOF) works to help build or rebuild the foundations of our communities by offering wraparound services for families that are in need of assistance. Those families include single, military, grandparents and fostering families.

We address homelessness, social and emotional support, employment, justice impacted and education.

Our current commitment, 100 Families Strong, is one expression of that — a hundred households, known by name, wrapped in this ecosystem of care.

“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” — Galatians 6:2

Who We Serve

Families carrying more than most people see.

Saving Our Families exists for households across Gary who are working hard and still stretched thin — single parents, military families, grandparents raising grandchildren, and fostering families among them.

What Happens Next

From a phone call to a family that isn't doing this alone.

01

You Reach Out

A family, neighbor, teacher, or church member gets in touch — no referral form required, just a conversation.

02

We Listen

Someone from our team sits down with the family to hear their story and understand what would actually help.

03

We Build a Plan Together

Not a form we fill out for you — a plan we build with you, around what matters most to your family.

04

We Stay

Check-ins, encouragement, and support that keeps going long after the first conversation.

Common Questions

Before you reach out.

Not at all. Plenty of the families we walk with are stable in some areas and stretched in others. You don't need to be in crisis to reach out — just looking for support is enough.

No. Saving Our Families is open to any household in the Gary community. Our church runs the program, but our door is open to our whole neighborhood.

It depends on the family. Some connect with us for a single resource; others walk with us for a season while they rebuild their footing. We move at your pace.

Wonderful — use the contact form below, or reach out directly. We just ask that you let the family know you're referring them, so our first conversation isn't a surprise.

No. Every part of Saving Our Families is offered at no cost to the families we serve.
